We will graciously accept any of the items the list below or donations toward purchasing the needed supplies and medications from the non-profit organization MAP (described under “Medications” section). We typically purchase $1200 worth of medications from MAP and appreciate any contributions toward this life-saving cost.
This list was carefully compiled based on items used in past years. The bold items on the list are the most desperately needed or are not available for purchase in Kenya and Uganda and are, therefore, a top priority
Expired medications cannot be taken into these countries. Therefore, it is best if the medications have a far-off expiration date as most of the people receiving the medications will only have access to them once per year. We need to provide a long-term supply.
All supplies should be in unopened packages with a stamped expiration date if applicable.
Give Us Wings can provide any letter needed to obtain medications or provide a detailed report of donated supplies if a “write-off” is required.
Wound Care Supplies:
- Sterile 2 x 2, 4x 4 and larger
- A&D ointment
- Antibiotic ointment
- Specialty dressings for burns, deep wounds (wound care products that act as “skin” or a protective barrier but have minimal glue to easily detach from the skin)
- Cotton q-tips
- Normal saline in small pink bottles and larger sizes for cleansing of wounds
- “Nu-skin” or similar products for small wound closures
- Sterile repair or closure kits for extensive wounds needing stitches
Vitamins- Vitamin B6, B12
- Folic Acid
- Multi-Vitamins
- Iron
- Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D
- Children’s vitamins
- Magnesium
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin C
Medications:
Medications are bought from MAP, an organization that sells medications at a reduced rate to non-profits. The following categories of medications are either out of stock at MAP or their supply has unacceptable expiration dates:
- Anti-hypertensive medications
- Diabetic control meds
- Antibiotics for children for intestinal parasites and ear infections/upper respiratory infections
- Asthma medications
- Antibiotics for all ages for treatment of malaria (now Sulfa resistant in Kenya and Uganda so cannot be sulfa based meds per CDC report)
- Ulcer control medications
- Ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin
- Acetaminophen/Tylenol
General Supplies- Gloves- small, medium and large
- Hand sanitizers
- Hand wipes/towels for cleaning surfaces
- Sharps containers
- Biohazard bags (to help everyone identify with hazardous materials at clinic)
- Stethoscopes
- Sphygmomanometers
- Digital thermometers – with 2000 slip covers
- Power bars/energy bars – not the liquid form
- IV equipment (sets) – we can purchase IV medications/re-hydration in country
- Ophthalmoscopes / Otoscopes (battery operated)
- Diagnostic software
- Ultrasound machine
- Bladder scanner (battery if possible)
- White lab coats – long or short
- Calculator
If you have items that you would like the 2010 Volunteer Group to bring with them to Africa:
