Besides being a midwife, Mwanalima is an expert at raising chickens. She has 200 chickens. She sells eggs and makes about 4,000/=ksh ($65) a week. Her husband is a short haul lorry driver working near the beach so he is able to come home at night. “I usually raise chicks at the same time as I have layers so that my income is sustainable,” Mwanalima said. “Usually I buy chi cks in Ukunda, but during the post-election chaos I used the money to buy chicks to buy food instead. Every-thing was so expensive, we had to spend more than nor-mal just to feed our families.” “Since January life has become very difficult,” Mwanalima said. “And now that I don’t have chicks, my income will go down.” “I would be so happy if I could get a loan to buy more chicks. I want to be self-sufficient. I want my family to be able to rely on me. I should be an example for them.” |
